Ontario’s Highway Winter Maintenance Program

Our government is keeping roads and highways safe this winter
December 4, 2024
Our government is working to ensure a safe and efficient highway network across the province – particularly during the winter months, which can pose significant challenges for drivers.
- Ontario has some of the highest standards in North America when it comes to clearing our highways following a snowfall, with plows deploying within 30 minutes of the start of storms.
- With more than 1,400 pieces of equipment ready to fight the harshest winter conditions, our winter maintenance contractors are active 24/7 to clear highways.
- We have installed 24 new Road Weather Information System (RWIS) stations (14 in Northern Ontario) to supplement the current 152 standard RWIS stations to improve response times.
- The Ontario 511 app is available to all drivers across the province and provides images from over 600 cameras and includes up-to-date highway information on construction, rest areas, collisions, and road closures.
- Ontario continues to work closely with our municipal partners to respond to winter snowfalls and improve our maintenance times.
Our government is keeping roads and highways safe this winter by:
✅ Upgrading our snowplows
✅ Improving rest stops in northern Ontario
✅ Installing more weather stations
